Eternal King is a wave-based hack ‘n’ slash with deep, involved combat. Hone your skills against unrelenting hordes of monsters in a surreal fantasy world. MASTER THE BLADE Pick up satisfying melee combat that is both expressive and challenging. Simple controls hide a slew of mechanics like dodges, guards, parries, projectile deflects, enemy stepping, revenge values, and more. But be warned; your foes won’t stand idle to flashy swordsmanship. LEARN NEW POWERS Select from 30 unique abilities over the course of a run, expanding your combat potential. Teleport through enemies with Blink Cut, cast an explosive defense with Reflect, or soar across arenas with passives like Glide. GROUNDS OF BATTLE Fight in 9 arenas, with a randomised selection of abilities and handcrafted enemy configurations each run. Each arena has harder variants, making for over 100 unique encounters.
The voice acting is hit and miss, but free of production problems. The music is comprised mostly of an upbeat collection of roughly oriental-influenced tracks, and while they all sound pretty slick and handle their role well, I found none particularly catchy enough to inspire an out-of-game listen. It offers 7 levels in total with a boss at the end of each stage. Since the game can be played solo, this review will cover the game in that mode. The 3D models look smooth and cute-looking, and despite being shown from afar when you are in combat, the main characters still look nice when the camera zoomed on them in cutscenes. Enemies are also easy to distinguish and the color palette makes it easy to figure out which enemy holds which power-ups.
Eternal King Pre-Installed:
The rest of my playtime was spent finishing the rest of the achievements. I had to replay all but one level twice to get a master rank in each level, which is required for the achievements. You don’t need to replay the levels if you are skilled, though. There is still a bit of a learning curve, though. You need to figure out how to utilize your combo attacks and power-ups properly. I also liked that you can’t just mash the attack button to finish the level since some enemies are unique. Challenges are tight but never unfair, as well as the boss battles and fight sequences themselves. Checkpoints are forgiving and won’t leave you throwing game pads about unlucky runs.
