FAITH is a pixel horror game inspired by the era of classic 8-bit gaming and the “Satanic Scare” of the 1980s. Use your holy crucifix to perform exorcisms, fight back against possessed cultists, and cleanse haunted objects. Discover a world of dread, isolation, and mystery as you explore haunted forests, abandoned churches, and the inner sanctums of a Satanic cult. FAITH – Haunted by nightmares and searching for answers, a young priest returns to the house where an exorcism went horribly wrong a year before. FAITH: Chapter II – After confronting unspeakable paranormal entities and narrowly escaping with his life, a young priest descends into a new nightmare. FAITH: Chapter III – Aided by a mysterious stranger, a young priest travels the dark countryside to stop a Satanic cult from summoning a horrifically powerful demon. The game is good, but a lot of reviews are high on kool-aid, so I’ll try to manage expectations a little.
Faith is one of those titles that are difficult to sell in a way that will make people actually believe it’s worthwhile. But it is. Is it worhy of full price? It takes you about 1 to 2 hours per episode and there are 3 episodes. You can probably sequeeze double that time if you go for 100%. It took me 4 hours to finish all chapters once, but I already knew how to finish Chapter 1 (was free on itch). May take up to 5 hours for people starting from 0. You be the judge if time per $ is good value. I recommend this for anyone who finds the artstyle or the game in general ingriguing after looking at trailers. If you want to have a taste of what Atari games felt like – try it. But don’t expect an exceptional gaming experience. Faith has it’s high and low points. I don’t recommend it for people who look at it and hate the artstyle – it’s surely a hard sell.
Faith is an Atari-style adventure horror game with a voice-synthesizer dialogue and rotoscoped animations thrown in for good measure. In general this game would never run on a real Atari system – too much going on here even if it looks primitive. You play as a priest who tries to exorcize demons. Plot is pretty wide even if not very deep. There’s a lot of lore and some mysteries to solve if you are into it. You can walk around and aside from that – there is only one button used for interaction. Well, not really true, because you also have a pause button which brings up a menu/map/notes etc. But ingame you have only 1 button, which is accurate to 1 button Atari joysticks. You activate, pick up and fight off stuff by walking and using that single button, which usually brings out your crucifix.

Most of the game you will walk around, explore, find things to exorcise for more notes (these can be hidden in seemingly random objects) and protect yourself from hostiles by using your crucifix. Holding it in a direction of an enemy will either scare it off, or start dealing damage and possibly slow it down. There are some puzzles to finish, I can’t think of any medium-profile game that would try to imitate Atari games. The style that once powered the likes of Pitfall is now used to run a horror game. It works well, the game leaves a lot to your imagination, while boosting the tension with music and sound FX. Problem is they are often incomprehensible. When you have subtitles to follow what’s being said that’s still fine, and sometimes game does things to make the combination creepier, but many voice lines have no subtitles and you can only guess most of what’s being said. That’s the point when style fails. Let’s be honest here – if you say that those voice lines are supposed not to be understood, then they should have been gibberish in the first place, not real words.
