Falling for Beans Video Game Experience the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk like never before! Control Jack as you attempt to climb down the Beanstalk while being chased by the mighty Giant. Strategically fall between the vines of the stalk and a variety of leaves, all of which have special attributes that both hinder and assist in your decent. Don’t fret if you don’t make it on your first go, collecting beans while descending both tops off your health and allows you to buy upgrades for future attempts! A nice, concise game with a fun, under-explored concept of downward vertical 3D platforming. At first, with no upgrades you’ll often find yourself bumbling down the beanstalk taking damage here and there and likely struggling to get a favorable path or foothold. Investing your collected beans in upgrades will make downward progression more streamlined. There are multiple investments that will change the way this downward journey feels. Reducing your fall damage and increasing your max health and in air survival time will help you to go for paths you spot further down the beanstalk.
Increasing your movement speed will allow you to jump further and direct yourself better toward a favorable path. I find the bean healing upgrade to be a good general purchase as healing helps to remedy the fall damage you’ll be racking up. In terms of gameplay I find this game to be very nice. I like the way the beanstalk winds, it has what I find to be a fair proportion of navigable sections and portions that are too steep to stand on. The leaves also seem to spawn in a fair distribution, of course, sometimes a run feels lucky or unlucky often depending on your breakaway leaf spawns but I think that adds to the intrigue run to run. As you upgrade your character and streamline your movement and decision making the game becomes a lot more navigable and begins to feel like a different experience. The secret is to fall on those leave that do not hurt you. Only two types entirely negate the damage, although they aren’t ideal. One breaks your fall, but it instantly disintegrates, causing you to fall even further.

The only deadly leaf is a flytrap, which quickly kills you. One of the leaves relies on a broken mechanism, rendering it useless. The leaves moves left and right, making aiming at it more difficult. The issue is that once you land on it, you don’t move along it. If you’ve ever played a game with moving platforms that don’t “carry” you, you’ll understand what I mean. To make the descent less difficult, you may come upon random magical beans that heal you. Another reason they’re significant is that you can upgrade certain things, allowing you to ultimately reach solid ground. While reduced fall damage sounds enticing, a much more useful perk is actually air time that prevents you from passing out when falling for too long. Each subsequent upgrade costs twice as much, so you’ll have to go on quite a few runs.
