Flashback 2 TOTAL WAR HAS BEGUN… RISE TO THE CHALLENGE! In 1992, Flashback revolutionized action gaming and gained legendary status, ranking among the 100 best video games in history. If you never played 1992’s Flashback, or any of the re-releases or remasters since, it’s a retro platformer and adventure game where you jump and roll around, solve puzzles, and shoot mutants in a dystopian cyberpunk future. Despite a pretty enormous 30-year gap, this sequel very much follows in the footsteps of its predecessor and put me back into the righteous boots of Conrad. A sci-fi universe true to the original Flashback. for an all-new science fiction adventure that has me blasting underworld thugs, running away from creepy tentacled aliens, and exploring the neon-soaked streets of New Washington. There was even a part where I got into a giant robot mech to partake in an illegal cage match against some villainous ne’er-do-well – they’re definitely going all-out with the usual adventure game shenanigans and minigames. It definitely struck me just how much developer Microids is sticking to the original’s roots after three decades, but as you’d expect some pretty significant improvements.
He’s the hero who first came to prominence back in 1992. This time around you find yourself slapbang in the middle of the 22nd century, all as the United Worlds starts to extend through the solar system. Unfortunately the peace and ideals of life are being threatened, all by the Morph, led by one General Lazarus. Taking place in “in an action-packed cyberpunk universe where the fate of humanity itself hangs in the balance,” the sequel is a direct follow-up to the first game that looks set to emulate its side-scrolling, Prince of Persia-esque gameplay. You’ll play series hero Conrad B. Hart—a name of frankly terrifying power—as he fights opponents who are “determined to enslave every civilization in the Solar System”. Unlike the first game, the new one is a resplendent 2.5D affair, letting you move along the ol’ Z-axis and adding a bit more depth to the game’s puzzles. It should be a faithful sequel— original creator Paul Cuisset is leading the project—although it’s not yet clear if it’ll have any ties to the 1995 3D follow-up game Fade to Black (nevermind the cancelled, though now available via emulation, Game Boy Advance sequel).
Flashback 2 Direct Play:
Flashback 2 has other original team members on board in addition to Cuisset. This includes Thierry Perreau on game design and Amiga composer Raphael Gesqua. While it looks like a faster-paced take on the classic, it’s nice to see Flashback 2 clinging to cinematic adventure game animations. The way Conrad hangs from ledges and performs all-important combat rolls should look familiar enough to longtime fans. Sure, they may have misspelled “Washington” in one of the cinematics, but it looks like a lot of care was put into bringing the battle against the Morphs to 2023. Flashback 2 spins its dystopian sci-fi yarn on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC on November 16. It’s going physical and digital on consoles, too, and the Collector’s Edition packs in some extras for those who want to shout their Flashback love from the heart of their shelves. It’s here where Conrad once again comes to the fore. As he goes in search of his lifelong friend Ian.
