So, here’s a quick list of what you’d expect from an old school game, and how this one handles them. For A Vast Future is mostly linear but in a way that feels like the story is moving forward quickly. No random battles; enemies are on the screen and can be avoided if you really, really want to. Grinding is optional, but even if you do it the grind is over pretty quickly. There’s a small amount of exploration and side-exploration, but your characters’ base move speed is quite high and the game gives you a motorcycle early-on that doubles your speed and gives you fast travel. The fights, particularly boss fights had decent balance: I didn’t feel especially challenged by any of them, but I also didn’t breeze through them or feel cheated.

The other primary combat command is Wargear; this is essentially the Items command in other games. Anyone on the team can use any item the team has. These include healing items, buffs, single target weapons (elemental and neutral), and all-enemy weapons (sometimes damage-all, sometimes damage-target and status-effect-all). As to the Wargear itself, the vast majority of it can be crafted if you find the schematics. There is no money in this game; you trade base ammo for specialty ammo, and craft wargear from various forms of scrap. Ammo and scrap can be found but are also dropped by enemies. Combat is turn-based, using the Speed stat to determine the combat order for all participants (this can be viewed during combat at any time). As the fight progresses, either side may inflict status effects that alter the order of who fights next in combat. Choosing ammo and using wargear winds up becoming much more organic than you might think from just reading the above description. Different enemies have different strengths and weaknesses, and who is available to deliver what attack isn’t guaranteed.
