Garbage Pail Kids Mad Mike and the Quest for Stale Gum Direct Download
In the 80’s, the world was ruled by two things: the NES and Garbage Pail Kids cards. These lovable grossout monster children could be found in the lunchboxes of every latchkey kid, juvenile delinquent, rascal, and brat in your neighborhood. At the same time, the NES was taking over living rooms all across America. So, it only made perfect sense when these two dominant forces of 80s pop culture came together… right? Right????? Well, here’s the thing: that never happened. Until now. iam8bit Presents, alongside the developers/time-travelers at Retrotainment and our friends at Topps, are proud to present this Long-Lost, All-New Garbage Pail Kids NES Game: Garbage Pail Kids: Mad Mike and the Quest for Stale Gum.
Congrats to Retrotainment Games, Digital Eclipse, Iam8bit, and Topps for finally giving us a Garbage Pail Kids game. The game may be based on Garbage Pail Kids, but it is actually a hidden gem. You’ll hurl over the grotesque characters of the GPK universe but not the rock solid and addictive gameplay. It has that nostalgia goodness that the NES kids back in the day will appreciate but sensible and clever gameplay that more modern gamers come to expect. This game is on the easier side overall but still provides a good challenge as far as the gameplay loop goes. There are 6 levels in total and they’re quite large by classic Nintendo standards. There are a decent amount of secrets to find as well as a trading card metagame where you can trade and collect all of the GPK cards with the other characters to get them all.
Graphics are very solid for an 8 Bit Nintendo title, there are some minor issues with the overall look as far as it can be difficult to see enemy projectiles sometimes, but it uses the limited NES color palette very well and has good parallax scrolling effects in use. The music is catchy and familiar, they did a greay job with the compositions. And it is a pretty reasonable length, it took me about 3 hours to beat the game from start to finish doing a normal playthrough. Multiple difficulty settings as well as the achievements and trading card aspects will have me coming back for more in the near future.
Garbage Pail Kids Mad Mike and the Quest for Stale Gum Direct Play:
GPK nicely combines those old games with some newer sensibilities and ideas. Luke’s vomit attack arcs downward to hit lower enemies, sticks around as a damage trap, and even drips down through platforms to reach lower levels. Mad Mike does extra damage at the cost of range. Leaky Lindsay has horizontal range. Patty Putty jumps high and bounces off enemies, sometimes to secret areas or even shortcuts. Meanwhile the trading system lets you buy and use special cards for effects like killing all enemies around, or temporary flight. You can even fill up your Trash meter and store it as long as you want for whenever you need 10 seconds of invincibility. Difficulties range from Hard’s brutal 1-hit deaths to Tourist’s casual no-stress invincibility. And on top of all that, Digital Eclipse lends their emulation frontend, with save and rewind features.
