About The Game
In Hatup you’ll have the mission to go through different challenges with your hat that will allow you to progress through the game’s stages. Using different mechanics you will face many challenges and with different levels of difficulty. Use your hat to think about how to solve the game’s challenges and remember, leaving your hat behind isn’t always a bad option. Using your hat you will have to solve challenges where some passages are unlocked when you are wearing the hat and others are only unlocked when you are not using them. The art kinda speaks for itself, so I actually wanna quickly touch on the game’s biggest problem – the difficulty spikes.
There are several points throughout the game where the difficulty can quadruple (or more) for a single room completely out of nowhere, often leading to a lot of frustration. A few reviews I’ve seen have blamed this on finnicky aiming controls, which I’d have agreed with prior to finishing the game and collecting items/finding secret paths and whatnot. Most (if not all) of the “finnicky rooms” are really easy once you find a specific upgrade or upgrade your core a bit, so it’s not a problem if you don’t have a compulsive need to 100% the game as you play through the story. Some of the combat challenges, though, are genuinely pretty frustrating if you don’t come at them with a maxed out core and specific loadout.
I love the art style, the music (at first) is great but gets really repetitive and lacks diversity, the gameplay and puzzles are fun and unique. It feels like it takes inspiration from a couple different games and genres and makes it’s own niche with the pinball physics. The ending was rather tame and left a couple loose ends, though let’s be honest the biggest draw for the game is everything I listed above and not it’s in-depth story. It’s also a pretty easy game as I only really struggled with one dungeon/boss (Synchronous Field). THAT BEING SAID, the end dungeon was actually really hectic but if you pay attention to your equipment you can get through it pretty easily. The final boss battle(s) were actually really, really fun though.
