The celebration of Liberty Day 2019 is upon us! Super Earth Command have made a new training area available for Helldivers in an all new game mode called Proving Grounds. These challenging, repeatable, missions have unique modifiers that will put your skills to the test! We’re also introducing a new loadout system with random- and favorite- loadouts. In celebration of Liberty Day 2017, new FREE equipment has been added to the Helldivers arsenal. To protect Super Earth from all threats and spread managed democracy, unlock the 3 new Stratagems (Heavy Strafing Run, ‘Thunderer’ Smoke Round, A/GL-8 Launcher Turret) by liberating planets. For Super Earth! It’s a difficult game, to be honest. Many enemies are extremely tough, and have tiny weak spots where you have to have spot on aim to kill them, and then there are some enemy types that are impervious to all your weapons except rocket launchers or airstrikes. However, the most dangerous obstacle in this game are arguably your own teammates, as friendly fire in this game is a very common occurrence, and when calling in more equipment, you can be crushed under the droppods.
A top-down twinstick shooter where you fight against giant alien bugs, hideous cyborg monstrosities and advanced alien psychics, with an arsenal of assault rifles, shotguns, lasers, grenades, mech suits, tanks, and nuclear airstrikes, you are part of the HELLDIVERS, an elite team of highly trained human soldiers doing their duty to protect Super Earth by “liberating” the other factions. It’s very highly tongue-in-cheek universe where “DEMOCRACY” and “LIBERTY” are yelled at every given opportunity while you’re kicking in the teeth of everyone who isn’t human. Negatives? The Pistol Perks Pack DLC is trash. Why? Because it’s poorly implemented. Same goes for the Grenade Perks (not DLC, but same deal). That is: you only have 1 Perk slot and all of the above occupy that slot, instead of… dunno, actually being regular inventory items that don’t take that all-too-precious Perk slot, like every other freaking weapon in the game???
The story is easily one of the best out of any Yakuza game so far. In fact, having played 0 to 7, I’ll go so far as to say it has the best by far. Ichiban is an incredibly endearing protagonist that perfectly fits the Yakuza universe in both its seriousness and silliness in equal measure. The plot pacing is excellent and the story is extremely well told, handling its fundamental themes of depression and societal alienation with finesse without shoving them in your face relentlessly. The entire cast is outright lovely in their differences and friendship, and that alone carries the entire Sotenbori segment in my opinion. Every character feels “close enough” to existing ones all while being their own thing all the same. It’s a very delicate touch that lets veterans go from 6 to LAD without feeling alienated but without comprimising the story too badly. It’s very good. Visually the game is generally pretty appealing but suffers from the usual Yakuza problem of “extremely high res characters in low res environments” and “random low quality CGs after ingame rendered cutscenes” which can be jarring, but kudos for the lovingly crafted rendering of Ichiban’s perm. Seriously, this is the best hair I’ve seen in any game. Ever.
