About The Game
HROT is a single-player retro FPS set in a small socialist country neighboring Soviet Union (Czechoslovakia) after an unspecified disaster in 1986. Those times were dark and terrifying and so is the game. You start in a civil defense shelter deep under a Prague Metro station. As a proud holder of the military readiness badge you know what your duty is: put on a non-functioning gas mask, load the vz. 52 pistol and protect the peace and your socialist homeland from the strange intruders*. The classic gameplay and vibe of romeric shooters from 1990s including a fitting brown retro aesthetic. You’ll find a shotgun, a vz. 13 SMG, a rocket launcher and even some secret experimental Soviet battery-powered weapons (e.g. a ball lightning launcher). If you run out of ammo, you might find the hammer and sickle coming in handy.
Handcrafted levels inspired by real locations with an emphasis on historical details. Every level contains socialist paraphernalia which nowadays can only be found in museums or your grandma’s attic (Eastern Bloc only). When mosquitoes get sufficiently bloated with blood and turn into Party leaders, ghastly swamp lights, the stars of Kremlin, appear over the muddy waters. When these corrupt servants of tetanus drag enough gurgling victims down into the mass grave of black sludge, the palace of torture rises from the bog. With its bricks made of porous raw meat, and dark secrets weeping within its premises. The wandering graveyard flagellates the surrounding lands, grimacing on its defiling path. On the bones of the grieving, it feasts, distorting the nature of man, perverting the very concept of good intent, turning spring waters into vinegar to dip people in like dumplings. Rolling in loops of ruthless violation, the breaking wheel was created of rot, yet it never crumbles, only flakes. Nurtured on its mastitis milk, when someone hands you a loaded gun and points in any direction, you ask no questions. Tebe davno pohui.
To highlight a couple of things before we go on, HROT has the coolest multi-layered skyboxes ever, the rest you can see on your own. But I gotta note that there’s a world of difference between works that look like crap because an artist is a hack, and HROT, every stroke of brush in which reflects immaculate taste and truly cunningly expressed intent. The latter is the most important thing about art to me, I normally don’t care for “just pretty”. Or “just ugly”, for that matter. And however painstaking a vapid creation may be, something as resonant as the game wipes its hairy ass with it. The sounds have the oomph, but there’s no music. It was replaced with static, dripping, droning, humming, and every little thing works as potent steroids, force-fed to the Herculean atmosphere of this rust golem.
