Jet Island is massive open world and you have an arsenal of tools that will allow you to travel through this world at extreme speeds! When standing on your hoverboard, the ground below you becomes frictionless. Perfect for sliding up and down the mountainous terrain. To control the direction of your movement and gain even more speed, you have two wrist mounted jet thrusters. You also have grappling hooks to swing from tall structures and climb up the side of giant monsters. The combination of these tools provide a freedom of movement unlike any other. There are no limits to what you can do. It’s the closest feeling to learning how to fly. It’s like a dream where you’re flying, in a beautiful, saturated, peaceful low-fi world. You can move effortlessly, fly at incredible speeds, reach out and touch the sky or plummet to earth at a reckless pace. This is a game that shows what VR is capable of and the kind of experience, the more than life experience, the beyond simulation experience, that VR devs should strive for.
The controls make sense and give you a great toolbox for movement, with upgrades as you go. This will probably test your VR legs. The disclaimer about making sure your play space is clear is not a joke, you may lose track of which was is “Down”. It has a lot of the feel of Shadow of the Colossus, Myst, or even Dark Souls, where you’re clearly an interloper, a very small intruder in a vast and ancient place. If you want to see what VR has the potential to be once devs stop mashing out shovelware arcade shooters and trying to replicate pancake games you really owe it to yourself to get Jet island. This game is awesome!!! It’s a bit on the short side if you simply go from one boss directly to the next, but in that sense, Jet Island is the definition of “short but sweet”.
Jet Island Direct Play:
I wish there were more VR games out there that were this ambitious with their movement mechanics. Also, I’m not going to spoil anything but these boss fights are some of the coolest things I’ve ever experienced in a VR game. The movement is really smooth and so inherently fun that simply traversing the island going to my next objective is enjoyable in its own right. Jet island doesn’t try to convince you that you’re in a real space, it succeeds in convincing you that you’re in an impossible space and can do impossible things.
