About The Game
Otonashi Mayu is a bullied, weird girl. She is excellent at shogi, but extremely quiet, a little scary, and dark rumors swirl about her like thick smoke. Her worst bully, Fifield, torments her regularly, and the game begins with the start of her worst act yet. Magic exists in this society, and Fifield is a witch. Using her power, she decides to invade Mayu’s mind, with the goal of digging up all of her dark secrets, and uncovering the truth of what exactly Mayu is and why. But the mind invasion spell is fragile, and there are some things that are better left uncovered. Let things slip too far, and the hunted just might be able to become the hunter… Part puzzle game, part walking simulator, and part visual novel, Jishogi is a story about revenge, forgiveness, talent, ethics, and sexuality. It features heavy moral ambiguity, and as much potential for evil as there is good. Note: The game has between 3-10 hours worth of content, depending on how many endings you want to see and how fast you are with puzzles.
On the good side… Well, pretty much everything. The story has a huge twist a few hours in, to the point that I’m honestly shocked that the store page keeps quiet about it. The puzzles also get a lot better around that point, although unfortunately, the portion of the game before that is a bit weak. After it opens up though, I really enjoyed it. The ending is also handled in a really interesting way. The puzzles are pretty good. There’s a lot of difficulty spikes and dips, and a few really seem impossible at first. On my second playthrough, though, I was surprised to find out how simple they were in hindsight. It basically functions how a good puzzle game should, although a few of the challenges can get tedious after a while. The OST is great. It’s not Toby Fox or anything, but it really has a certain charm to it. There were a lot more toe-tappers than I was expecting in a relatively short game like this. The story can be a little awkward at first, but later on, you find a bunch of logbook entry things that explain everything. It’s a little infodump-y, but it all makes sense in the end if you make it that far. Overall, it really needs more love. Play up until you get to the second castle if you can, it really gets good at that point. Solid recommendation.
the characters are really believable, and even the antagonistic characters in the story have a lot of depth. the protag is also super cool, and the way the story shows how she makes her way through obstacles is very fascinating uwu the puzzles are very unique, and very puzzling! i had to get out the pen and paper for the latter half of ’em, so if you like challenging puzzles, this is the game for you! if i had one complaint, it’d be the pacing. moving puzzle pieces early on is very slow (remedied later on), and player movement in general is slow. later on, even the “easy” stages take a long time to get through. you can skip some stages, but it might affect the ending? a puzzle ethusiast might enjoy all the puzzle content, but i found it kinda tedious near.
