Packed with Hollywood-worthy combat sequences and cinematic twists and turns, this twisted tale will keep your mind racing for answers until the very end. That being said, it’s still a amazing game. Substories are hilarious and well done (for the most part), story is very well written (probably the best one RGG has made yet), doesnt have the usual dumb plot twists some of the Yakuza games have. OST is very, very good. I didn’t run into any bugs, crashes or stutters in 130ish hours of gameplay and it kept a steady framerate of 120 most of the time.
Story is really deep and better than almost every movie I’ve seen before and I don’t really know any other game that is pair with Yakuza games and spin-offs like Judgment. I think, RGG Studio is so far the best in gaming industry, because no matter what the cost of game is, you will get hours and hours of PURE fun and replay value is huge because such good stories and characters deserve a lot of replays..even maybe their own spin-offs. Judgment is a really successful spinoff of the Yakuza / Like a Dragon series, just as fun as a Kiryu story but renewed due to Yagami’s fresh face at the helm. That said, this is not an entirely different experience from the mainline, this is just a different flavor of the same formula. “Yakuza-adjacent hero street-fights his way to the bottom of a massive conspiracy threatening to destroy Kamurocho” describes almost every RGG Studio project, and this is no different. There are nods to Rockstar’s L.A. Noire in the way Yagami searches crime scenes and tails suspects, but it should be understood that this game will feel very familiar to series fans, sometimes to its detriment.
Judgment Direct Play:
The new things Judgment brings to the table are generally positive – I enjoyed Drone Racing more than I expected and rank it highly among the series’ flagship minigames like the Hostess Club and Pocket Circuit. VR Paradise (Mario Party), Lockpicking, Disguises and the crime scene investigation minigames were positive inclusions, too. Suspect tailing, however, is so dull and impossible to fail at that the game would be better off without it. And it is a huge part of the game, accounting for at least 15 missions. That brings me nicely to the next point – completion of this game is long, it’s tedious, and it’s not worth your time. Insulting missable achievements (wait 3 minutes before saving Sugiura?? For what purpose?) pair with unnecessary endgame grinds to make for an unpleasant post-story experience. And because this is such a low-power Yakuza title, with no equipment or inventory weapons to augment Yagami’s modest combat abilities, a Legend mode playthrough is an exercise in frustration and essence-gulping.
