I honestly have mixed feelings about this title, it sat in my library for years, and when the sequel was released, I also didn’t seem to care much.

I just recently got around to completing the story, which I did in one sitting. It’s not long, but it doesn’t feel short either. I had a hard time understanding the story, which was to be expected based on how the core game mechanics push you forward, It’s easy to miss certain clues or notes, and I was relatively certain I checked every single drawer and cupboard in the whole game, but still missed things. The house was definitely creepy, and lived-in, I applaud the art design of the game, and the architecture of the house, as well as the music, however the game has a few problems that I hope to see fixed when I go through the second installment. Cues are easily missed, and not all of the puzzles are designed in an intuitive way, which means you’ll likely have to google a thing or two. I had some lag spikes but I usually write those off to hardware discrepancies, I don’t fault devs for frame rate drops unless we are talking about consoles, PC’s have too wide of a net to hit everything all the time. One thing that bothered me was interacting with the ghost, I couldn’t tell if there were gonna be real consequences or changes if I allowed them to get me or if I successfully avoided each encounter.

I found by the 4th chapter I was just running through the game, the aesthetic is nice but if the game were shorter, I wouldn’t complain about it, I loved all of the artwork spread through the game, and I did have one specific heart dropping one moment which honestly is rare for me, I can see other moments of the game really creeping some people out, so I also won’t harp on the totality of the game simply for not always being scary to ME and MY sensibilities. I definitely enjoyed the halloween event room as well, that’s a nice touch. I think I’m gonna have to grab the DLC and see if it makes any difference on my opinion of the game, it’s a good purchase for fans of the horror genre, and fans of the short interactive story genre as well, just don’t expect to be blown away. With such a distinct tone and style to it, it gives a unique and ever changing environment in which to get to lost in and be painfully aware of it by how unexpected it can become.
