About The Game
Every day brings another mission. Every day is LIFE or DEATH. As an elite marksman in Vietnam, your job is to locate elusive enemy soldiers and pick them off one-by-one. Whether it’s patiently waiting for the enemy to show himself or delivering a pre-emptive strike, the method is the same – Be quick, be quiet and be careful. That’s what will get you HOME ALIVE. This is not your typical “guns blazing” or “shoot everything that moves” type of game. I call this a thinking man’s game. Some reviews call this game monotonous, and while I can see how that could be the case, that was not the case for me. Yes, stealth is about 75% of the game, but let’s be honest, much of Vietnam was either napalm airstrikes or stealth patrols, and you don’t fly a plane in this game, so stealth is it. Side note: I enjoy the geographical and historical background. It really makes you understand Vietnam better (both the country and the war).
As for gameplay: tough. Very tough. Press “quick save” often because each step might be your last…literally. But fortunately you can always quick load your last quick save and show those commies who’s boss. Weaponry: it’s a candy store for 1960’s historical firearm enthusiasts. You’ll get the opportunity to shoot the service rifle and pistol of the time, along with everything the enemy shoots at you. Another side note: I really like the fact that you can pick up or drop any weapon you find on the field (to include everything from AK-47’s to rocket launchers and everything in between). Ballistics are also more realistic than many games I’ve played. For example: the 7.62 round from the AK-47 has more stopping power than a 5.56, and a .45 from your service pistol is great up close, but you can tell it slows with range and isn’t as effective the farther out.
If you wound an enemy soldier….they shake off the hit like they were hit with a snowball. If you get hit however….you are stunned by every round. So if you get hit with several rounds from an enemy AK….then you are unable to fight back. Click the left mouse button all you want….you won’t be able to fire back until you are out of harm’s way. I recommend you turn off the annoying fog function so that you can better see the approaching enemy….and make sure that you use a sniper rifle in the majority of your encounters. An AK-47 from a fresh kill works as a good back up and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by it’s range. You’ll find the usual assortment of Vietnam era weapons here….but you’ll find yourself using the above mentioned weapons more than anything else. On most missions….you are coupled with a spotter….and his AI is mediocre at best. He is able to kill the occasional soldier….but he insists on hiding directly behind you….so if you are engaged in a firefight….he won’t let you back up at all. He also has trouble with path-finding.
