About The Game
Set in a series of procedurally generated labyrinths, Loot River is a dungeon crawling action roguelike that combines tense, real-time combat and dark fantasy settings with spatial block-shifting. As players venture through these endless catacombs, they’ll encounter beasts, lost travelers, and bosses. These cosmic grottos offer a wealth of new weapons and gear to discover, as well as unholy knowledge to unearth for permanent upgrades. Defeat enemies your way – unlock many different abilities, items and weapons, each with unique look, animations, powers, and style Gain knowledge and experience, level up, and defeat powerful bosses Immerse yourself in a beautiful, hand drawn, pixel art with fluid animations, real time 3D shadows, and astonishing water simulation It’s gorgeous as you can see from the screenshots and videos, and the mechanics are fun to puzzle around with most of the time. The hub world feels nestled nicely, the balance of loot and exp to each level feels appropriate, and I felt like I was progressing during each level, getting better, getting loot, etc, I could see my stats taking effect and feel the damage or hp upgrades in real time.
However, many have mentioned the combat feeling clunky, and I agree. Rather than i-frames, it feels like the dodge roll simply has you teleport a short distance, but if you don’t time that just right, you get hit even though you’re not behind enemies. Parrying is satisfying, with a nice little critical hit animation afterward, but the visual queues just are… popping enough. And the loot generation is… abhorent sometimes. I think on my third run, I went through the entire first city level, and only got charms, no weapons, none. I got multiples of most charms as I hadn’t unlocked more, and yet I died in the second level… with the starting weapons… Progression OUT of levels is my main sticking point. Games like Hades or Dead Cells provide you the chance to spend your currency either in pieces, or keep it after your run. In this game… you have to have the entire purchase price of an unlock to buy it… and they’re expensive. I didn’t unlock anything for several runs, and that gets discouraging. I only managed to unlock the first couple upgrades after finding a rare sword way outside of my level to power through a couple levels and buy some spells, which then snowballed me into more. But it’s not ideal.
