About The Game
In Mark of the Ninja, you’ll know what it is to truly be a ninja. You must be silent, agile and clever to outwit your opponents in a world of gorgeous scenery and flowing animation. Marked with cursed tattoos giving you heightened senses, every situation presents you with options. Will you be an unknown, invisible ghost, or a brutal, silent assassin? Upgrade new tools and techniques that suit your playstyle and complete optional objectives to unlock entirely new ways to approach the game. Finish the main story to unlock a New Game Plus mode with even more options and challenges. I played this when it was released and just recently revisited it. Out of all the ninja games out there, this is one of the best. There’s a delicious thrill in lurking around in the dark and stealthily dispatching enemies in creative and sneaky ways. The game gives you plenty of tools to dispatch your foes so your job is never boring. The game is helped by its smooth animation and creative design. Yes, it’s cartoony, but the game world is serious and mature.
I was surprised to see a few negative reviews on the steam page. I don’t think they are fair at all. It seems most of the criticism is about the repetition, but I guess this depends on taste. If you think killing foe after foe with a vast array of ninja techniques and tools throughout a level will bore you, you probably shouldn’t play ninja games. I mean, what else do you expect from a game called Mark of the Ninja? What do they think they’ll find? Crafting? Farming? Visual novel romance? Screwing up isn’t painful – Some games leave you reeling if you do a small screw up in a level, but Mark of the Ninja: Remastered does a really good job using checkpoints. If you screw up a stealth mission, for example, you can go back to the last checkpoint quickly in the menu and it doesn’t take you that far back. Once in a blue moon the checkpoint would be in an awkward place (like next to a dog who’s in the progress of sniffing you, or within ! of a baddie), so it’s not infallible. But it was good most of the time, and even in most of those tricky times I was able to strategize a way out of the situation.
Challenges/Replayability – Each level has 3 scrolls, one scroll-test room, and 3 optional objectives. If you get them all the level is gold and you get bragging rights for being so cool. The scroll-test rooms are very fun, and the scrolls each have haikus and background story for the game, so they’re worth getting. There’s also a New Game + mode, making everything much harder. Attire – There are unlockable outfits you can wear, each with its own plus and negatives. They’re very useful if you’re trying to get all the level challenges. All the outfits look awesome. Commentary – In an optional menu, you can unlock and look over commentary by the creators on what went on behind the scenes. This is all very interesting stuff, but I recommend looking at some of it after beating the game at least once so nothing’s spoiled for you.
