Metal Mutation is a Post-Cyberpunk Action Roguelike Dungeon Crawler set in a not-so-distant future taken over by companies and technology. As highly developed mechanical prostheses and AI have spread, so has a metal mutation caused by nanoparticles. With mankind and society on the brink of collapse, a Cyborg and an AI join forces to prevent the inevitable. Thanks to the miracles of technology, death is barely an inconvenience! Upgrade your character, customize your weapons and choose your path wisely as you fight for a better future. Use various types of weapons and synergize your elements for some stylish combat and flashy combos! Explore a cyberpunk world ravaged by company greed and technological ambition. Why are cyborg groups and augmented humans separated? How do people survive under the monopoly of big corporations? Take a break in between runs with The Shelter! Up to 4 players can face waves of monsters to accumulate resources, learn attack patterns and better prepare for their next attempt at the main story.
So far this feels pretty good and worth the long wait/delay. Gameplay is responsive and for an action roguelike, there’s quite a bit of build variety. My main issue with this game is the large difficulty spike on the third level, with multiple elites spawning in one room that can lock the player in hitstun, and the spiders that have unfair status effect procs that are often more difficult than the bosses. The first two levels feel fine with no metaprogression grinding but the third one seems to force it. Metaprogression upgrades are significant and will likely make the game really easy to clear if enough time is put into it, but the combat is good enough that you wish there wasn’t such a huge difficulty spike so that an experienced player could beat the game with skill. I consider this to be the biggest draw to this genre for me, and it really does feel like you’re not clearing this without at least some grind. Thankfully there are permanent defense boosts in the metaprogression shop, so anyone should be able to clear this in time.

If they balance the excessive hitstun and difficulty spike, I think this will be a worthwhile addition to your library. For now though, expect a bit of jank and grinding. I played a lot of the demo and loved the game. It’s still awesome. Combat doesn’t feel too clunky and I remember the upgrades and time making it even more fluid. Lots of fun! Main Story was cool, bosses are interesting and varied. Some are easier than others. I really enjoy the combat since you have to plan ahead slightly, button mashing is very bad and I always love games that punish the button mashers. First 2 main weapons are badass looking with one being more damage and the other being faster. I like the way you unlock bonuses for the weapon by progressing through the game. The water area looks absolutely amazing, so crisp – coolest level design so far to me. I love this art style. Probably my favorite style – cell shaded. It’s a timeless style to pick.
