The story is cute, the dialogue is on-point, the gameplay is sweet & satisfying – even though there’s an autocook function, I never use it, preferring to do all the cooking myself because it’s just plain fun. To say nothing of Lena Raine’s contribution to this game as well, of course; the music is great and very fitting for every situation.
It makes me a little sad to see so many negative reviews on this game. I get it, especially from keyboard/mouse players, but I wanted to combat them a little bit with some positivity around the devs. They’ve been extremely quick and responsive to every issue I’ve had (and everyone else in the server, too). I’ve seen some of the devs compete over who can jot down notes/ideas from players the quickest, which is amusing to say the least. They’re good folks, who clearly care about this game a ton – if a hiccup here and there doesn’t bother you too much, get the damn game. Especially now that there’s a new kb/m layout and autosaves, there’s no reason not to! Also, an aside: There’s no punishment (currently) for not sleeping in-game. This is HUGE for me as someone who has always hated how rushed games like Harvest Moon and Stardew make me feel to get everything done within certain amounts of time before the day abruptly ends and teleports you back home – I want my calm games to be calm, dang it.
Moonglow Bay Direct Play:
I want to start this review by saying that I play with mouse and keyboard. Yes, the original controls aren’t very intuitive, but the devs have put out a patch allowing you to remap controls at any point, and I’ve created my own system that worked just fine. (It also helps that all actions in game are labeled with what key it’s assigned to!) The dev team is also working hard to continuously put out quality of life fixes, and I really don’t have any complaints with how the game plays. As for core gameplay: you fish, you cook the fish you catch and you sell/give away the food you make. I already love fishing games, cooking games and community-building games individually, so it was a joy to see them all come together in Moonglow Bay. The fishing and cooking minigames are simple enough to learn.
