“NeverAwake” is a nightmarish twin-stick shooter with a unique worldview and original game rules. The girl fights against vegetables, dogs, school friends, and other things she hates. What does the girl see at the end of the battle? And will she be able to wake up? “NeverAwake” has a unique worldview with its high quality hand-drawn graphics and beautiful animations.The enemies are not demons…but vegetables and dentists that the girl hates. Things and creatures that everyone has had a bad experience with at one time or another become monsters and attack the protagonist “Rem”. With over 80 levels, dozens of bosses, and a unique gameplay system that allows players to retry many levels, NeverAwake is suitable for both beginner shooters and experts. Combine a multitude of weapons and accessories to fight off the monsters in your nightmares.
This game is absolutely incredible. I’ve played almost all of the best games in the “shmup” genre and this one comes pretty close to the top of my list. This game has extremely unique theming and art and it has some of the best enemy pattern and boss design I’ve ever seen. It also has quite a lot more content than I was expecting. The soul gathering system may seem a little bizarre, especially for bosses. You can basically skip the second half of every boss if you collect all of the soul items they release. I’m still not entirely sure what the reasoning behind this mechanic is but it gives the player a lot of choice in how they play the game. For example, if a player finds a boss to be too easy, instead of trying to finish the boss as quickly as possible they can try to endure as many loops as they can (when you kill a boss without reaching the soul goal, instead of winning, you fight a harder version of the boss) and then cash out when they feel they can’t survive any longer. I think this system gives the game a lot of replayability since you can always try to get further into a boss or stage.

The equipment system also gives the player a lot of play style options. The game can be made much easier or harder depending on how you choose to use the equipment. Equipping an item that gives you more max health and an item that allows you to regenerate health under certain conditions can make the game feel much more forgiving. A more confident player might forgo extra health and take equipment that improves their dash, increases damage, etc. The equipment system along with the soul system make this game both accessible to beginners and exciting for veterans. I highly recommend it to anyone at all interested in this genre! My favorite part of the game is the bosses, they’re very well done! For the most part most of the game is well-designed, a few sections are a tad hard but most of the game has a fair difficulty such that anyone can beat the game – even I’m not the best at shoot ’em ups but this game was fine for me to beat. The only stage I disliked was the one with drawers? that kept popping in and out, it was very troublesome.
