The decisions you make determine how your story ends. Whether it’s Anu’s vision of a universe that markets more than weapons, Octavio’s dreams of fame and fortune, or Fran’s frosty plot for revenge—their success or failure depends on you. Some of the tense beats and moments could have stood to be higher and tenser. That unfortunately works against the game at parts. It’s not much of an issue in the later episodes. But it’s a bit too persistent in the early parts. ‘That could have been done better or cooler’ crossed my mind more than it should have. Also, I think it should have ditched the episodes entirely and told one streamlined story to make it more even, as it didn’t really feel like the episodes were divided all that much. But that might not bug some people as much as it did me.

The high points of the story I found really high, though, and pretty emotional and often solid from a strictly human standpoint. They’re engaging in the right way. Also kudos to this game for really hammering in the point of dynamic storytelling, much more than the original Tales did. People in my household played the game simultaneously and got wildly different scenarios and endings. That’s definitely a positive for me I’ll preface this by saying I think the title of this game does it some harm in terms of what to expect from it. It’s neither a sequel to Tales From the Borderlands really or the next incarnation of Borderlands as a looter shooter RPG. What it is is the casual gaming equivalent of a DLC story centered on people who exist on the sidelines within the universe. More so than the original Tales, as that had more of a tighter correlation with the main stories of Borderlands. But such is marketing, and it technically lives up to its title.
