Inspired by the Italian zombie flicks from Lucio Fulci and Bruno Mattei, Night of the Gates of Hell promises to be a blood dripping, neon soaked, flesh rotting experience. I was also inspired by the early Resident Evil titles, but wanted to challenge myself to make it feel like a first person styled early RE title. What I mean by that is to require headshots on the zombies to kill them (which can be difficult to do without any fixed aiming!), and to keep the zombies slow and menacing. Most games seem to go with fast zombies in hordes but I wanted to keep this a tense, deliberate combat experience.” – Jordan King You’ll play as David, a quiet man whose wife recently passed away, and is living alone in his seaside apartment with nothing to lose when a zombie outbreak ravages upon his city and disrupts his normal every-day life. After gathering his thoughts, collecting a few weapons, and meeting up with other survivors, David realizes that he must fight his way to the truth behind the apocalypse, by gunning and slashing through the hordes of zombies.

Alright, zombie, zombie, zombie! Come on in, zombie lovers! Here at the Gates of Hell, we’re slashing zombies in half! Give us an offer on our vast selection of zombies, this is a zombie blow-out! Alright, we got dog zombie, hanged zombie, Blair Witch zombie. We got spouse zombie. We got zombie kids. We got half a zombie, conquistador zombie, Phalanx zombie, burning zombie, giant zombie, flayed zombie, zombie with tiny brains on a spine for a head, backwards zombie! C’mon, you want zombie, come on in, zombie lovers! If we don’t got it, you don’t want it! Come on in, zombie lovers! I almost botched the whole thing by getting stuck in a room, thinking the game was bugged. Decided to come back later and, annoyingly, got thrown to the beginning of the chapter upon returning. Tried again. Now, my gun glitched out, refusing to shoot. SH*T! Almost gave up when, out of nowhere, it dawned on me: this game is special and has the potential to become a cult classic. After another restart, the gun worked and getting stuck wasn’t a bug. I just missed a vent! The game and I shook hands. We started on the wrong foot.

After looking in its eyes for a moment too long, I smacked it on the festering lips, savouring the moist, porous texture. Rich and creamy. Disgusting? Wait until you thrust your arm up to the elbow down this game’s gross-out content hole. Maggots pouring out of someone’s mouth, bosom biting, purulent decay, eye-gouging, all kinds of other mutilations in unkempt places. Bathing in brutality, this game is a gore fiend’s trove and Panic Horror at its worst. Its fugliness adheres to its grimy charms of a smelly ashtray full of wet cigarette butts sprinkled with used band-aids. Perfectly juxtaposing with impressively sharp sound design, the visuals are incisively lo-fi. I prefer my mess crispy, but there are plenty of filters for the incomprehensible filth apologists. Everything’s so wobbly, love me some of that pulsating distress! Not being that versed in the Italian trash cinema, I only watched one and a half of Dario Argento’s movies – just enough to unmistakably recognise the theatrical coloured lighting in place. I also adore Fantozzi, but such esoterica isn’t entirely applicable. Right?
