Everyone knows how the story goes: innocent, 18-year-old Red Riding Hood goes into the woods and is corrupted by the naughty, naughty Big Bad Wolf. Ingrid is the newest Little Red Riding Hood: she doesn’t know what awaits her in the dark woods, but she knows that it seems exciting. But Ingrid’s world is only one of an infinite number of Tales, and those stories are starting to bleed over into one another. War is coming, and Ingrid doesn’t even know what war is. You see, the game enriches its themes by making use of its cultural identity, carving familiar ideas with an intimate and distinct style of symbolism. In one area, we see the smashed remains of a piggy bank (which will later be significant as a puzzle). In another area, we bear witness to a pink color palette decorated by fishes and paintings. This is not a game with a focal monster that you have to run away from, nor is it a mundane day-to-day ritual of various tasks to be completed amidst coating of folklore. Mythology has never just been about its fictional exterior. At its core, it explores the human condition; it’s why it was created. Likewise, “Detention” makes use of its mythos to connect horror to everything around us.
I found the puzzles to be satisfying, although I never found myself stuck (gameplay time includes time I paused the game and went to eat, etc.) Which leads to one of the problems… The game is short. But perhaps that’s not a bad thing, because as much as I enjoyed the puzzles, I had gotten bored enough to put the game down for a year. I think if you just sit down and try to marathon the game, you’ll get tired like I did. Which is a shame, since the game really is pretty good in smaller doses (maybe don’t leave the game so long that you forget all the mechanics though). But that leads to the other problem: it’s expensive. I’m not saying the game creators don’t deserve to get paid, it’s not a reflection on them.
