One Step from Eden combines strategic deck-building and real-time action with rogue-like elements, giving you the chance to carve a path of mercy or destruction. Fight alone or with a friend in co-op as you cast powerful spells on the fly, battle evolving enemies, and collect game-changing artifacts. Can you make it to Eden or will your destruction be imminent? Experience a blend of strategy and real-time action. Build your deck and fight through bullet hell as you make your way to Eden. Customize your deck and play style with 200+ spells and 100+ game-changing items. A cast of 9 playable characters across procedurally generated levels with alternate runs ensures you’ll never experience the same situation or outcome twice. Let’s talk about the gameplay first. OSFE has a lot of different characters, each having their own decks and abilities. This makes experimenting with the characters very fun, as they all have their own unique playstyle. Do you enjoy setting up turrets to overwhelm your enemies? Try Hazel out. Or do you like breaking enemy tiles and using them to your advantage? Terra is the right choice for you.
There are also an abundance of spells that you can add to your deck, ranging from a simple fire blast, to a near-fullscreen laser, to even a time-stopping spell. Each spell has its own “brand”, with each brand having its own type of spells. You can also select two brands to “focus” during a run, increasing the chances of you getting a card from the brands you’re focusing. Lastly, there are also “artifacts” that you can obtain that provide various effects. These artifacts can affect your run positively or negatively, so be wary of which ones you take during your run. What I love about this system is how creative you can get with making a build. Try experimenting with a combination of spells, and see what happens! Aside from the characters, spells, and artifacts, the main gameplay is solid, too. Every enemy has its own movement/attack pattern, which allows you to learn them so you can defeat a specific enemy without taking as much damage. That doesn’t mean the enemies are easy, though – some areas will overwhelm you with tricky enemies, forcing you to stay on your toes at all times. The enemies also get progressively harder as you move from world to world. Each world also has its own boss, primarily characters that you can unlock and play as. You can choose to spare or execute the bosses you encounter during your run.
I have thoroughly enjoyed playing through One Step From Eden. The combination of deck building and “bullet hell” combat is addicting and the roguelike elements keep each run feeling fresh. Plus, the art style and animations are a treat to look at. It is initially a difficult game to play. You have to manage a lot of information on the screen and it took me a few runs before my vision began to open up. So if you initially find it difficult, keep at it! Now that I have 100% the game, I can say with certainty that the unlock progression for Achievements, Skins, Loadouts, and Hell Runs is well paced and keeps up a constant challenge the whole time. My favorite thing about One Step From Eden is the fact that I can quickly boot up the game, do a 30 minute run, close out, and jump back in later. I wish more games were that easy to work into my schedule.
