About The Game
One True Hero is a quirky 3D platforming adventure featuring a young hero who can barely save himself! An Epic Adventure An evil tyrant… A magic sword… A young farmer turned Hero… It’s a tale we’ve heard thousands of times before, and in the kingdom of Genericia things like that happen every other week! This makes it hard for our Hero to be taken seriously when he tries to save a town that’s mysteriously sinking into the ground, even if he is the only one capable of saving it! Nerve-Racking Sword Fights All sorts of terrible evil creatures will stand in your path. You’re going to have to deal with them if you want to save the kingdom!
The gameplay switches back and forth between diary sequences and picture dialogues, whereby it seems that the graphics consist more of unfinished and sketchy pictures, which is probably intentional and in this form really fits this novella very well. Unlike some other visual novellas, the game doesn’t leave much freedom of choice and the interaction takes place here exclusively with the mouse, in which we wipe out images or parts of text with a finger swipe with an eraser. As a result, something new is revealed behind every movement and you stay more focused than if you only have to press a (mouse) button.
If found might be one of those games you stumbled across, unsure if it might be worth your while, your cup of tea, something that fits your taste in games. While I cannot make sure that this is a game for everyone, I will emphasize that everybody should play it. The story about Kasios, a transgender woman who is struggling to fit into her old home, might be one of the most emotionally touching arcs I ever witnessed. It is without a doubt very well written, empathic and honest to an extent that really makes you sit and think about how she and her friends must have struggled.
One True Hero Pre-Installed:
There are actually two stories intertwined: one of Kasios brief return to her home on Achill Island, Oileán Acla, and the journey of Cassiopeia, a female astronaut who tries to save earth from the inevitable destruction by a black hole. The latter is more on the philosophical side but in the end, both might lead to a conclusion that naturally falls into its place. The mechanics used to tell the story are not overly complicated but very unique. You are erasing Kasios memories, or rather her words, written in her diary. Everything she has to tell about her friends, her family, her past, present and future struggles will be lost once your eraser touches the screen.
