PAC-MAN arrives home on his birthday to find the Ghosts have kidnapped PAC-MAN’s family and ruined his party! Off to the rescue, PAC-MAN sets out to Ghost Island! Where do I begin? I remember walking into Best Buy with my dad at age 5 and picking this game fresh off the shelf. It quickly became one of my all-time favorites, up there with the Spyro and Crash Bandicoot games. I’d been longing to play it again when I found out that PAC-MAN WORLD Re-PAC was being released. This game didn’t disappoint, and I will likely play it through again very soon. Similar to the Spyro and Crash Bandicoot remakes, this is a shining example of fan service.
I gladly pay full price to support games like this, which have become few and far between as micro-transactions and profiteering continue to infect the gaming industry. The soundtrack was one of my favorite parts of the original, and the remake absolutely does justice to the original tracks. The updated visuals changed the levels a bit from my memory, but the core level layouts remained the same. There are some slight charms from the original missing, such as the cannon you can bounce on etc (if you know, you know), the utter frustration of Clown Prix (which has been changed to an easier first-person perspective) and I preferred the home world layout of the original, but the changes are not unwelcome. The improvements to the boss levels were also a welcome change to me.
