Paradiso Guardian Video Game is an ARPG in Metroidvania style. Play as Lenga Valentine, a battle angel from the Paradiso Army, you are going to reclain a floating castle invaded by unknown forces. Friendly or hostile, Lenga will encounter a few of interesting guys during his journey. Once defeated, they will lend a hand to Lenga, helping him reaching the top of the castle, where the truth shall be revealed. PG is an ARPG in Metroidvania style heavily influenced by Castlevania series. Players will explore different areas of the whole map and unlock new abilities in order to gain access to new areas. I’ve never played a metroidvania-type game before, but this game really pulled me in! It’s a yaoi game that’s not a visual novel, and I love that it has actual gameplay mechanics. I’ve had a ton of fun exploring the whole map and collecting all the unlockables. The game has smooth combat, the art style is beautiful and charming, and it has gorgeous instrumentals for each area of the map that really capture that Castlevania feeling.
If you have played Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, this game is basically that and other Castlevania titles on a smaller scale. If you see a giant bell, you know there’s something in there. If you see a waterfall, you know there’s something behind it. If you see a massive floating sword, a knight with a hammer together with a knight with twin blades, you know how they’re going to attack. Oh, there’s a weapon that has rainbow sparkles? You know this is your money-grinding tool. Depending on your tastes, you might feel this makes the game less fresh. The music and backgrounds are sometimes too similar too. Personally, I like how I get rewarded by playing the game like SOTN when I see similar situations (like the bell and the waterfall). If you haven’t, as long as you’re familiar with the Metroidvania genre, you’ll understand how to play this game without help.
Paradiso Guardian Direct Play:
If you’re not, you need to know that the game prevents you from accessing certain areas until you get skills that allow you do, usually by following the main quest which in this game is linear, though there will be no signs and arrows pointing you where to go. A bit of experimentation and remembering previously inaccessible places is required. Save points [which heal you] are also placed far from each other so save often and don’t engage in combat unless you’re confident you can conserve your HP. Luckily, the map isn’t too big that backtracking becomes a nightmare. The gameplay is actually far better than I expected. The level design are not perfect, there are some flaws, but overall it’s pretty standard. The library level is the peak for me, pretty creative. The boss fight are challenging, some of them can be frustrating, but overall they are quite fun, if you are stucked in certain boss fight, feel free to find ways to cheese them, it’s actually quite find to explore ways to cheese the bosses.
