Loved It. I’m a big fan of the old Monkey Island games, as I have great memories attached to them and they were among the first PC games I’ve ever played and complete. This one didn’t disappoint me at all. The art style really grew on me, the soundtrack was a great mix of old and new and the game was really smooth overall, even on the Deck, where I played most of It. Only downside for me was that sometimes on the Deck it wouldn’t start right away. Weirdly this problem never occured when the Deck was linked to the Docking station. There’s a lot to truly love about Psychonauts 2. The aesthetic and the characters within this world charmed the bejesus out of me, a hallmark of Double Fine. There are some smart moments of writing too, especially in the way the game addresses mental issues with a gentle humor and underlying seriousness. And as a complete package, this might be the meatiest Double Fine game to date, with lots of levels and exploration to be had.
Path of Ra Direct Play:
Like so many Double Fine games, this is a chore to actually play at times. Platforming elements often feel just a hair off, like the main character Raz should either magnetize better or make easier connections with the next environmental object. There are also some bafflingly difficult portions of the game that are only that way due to the controls or frustrating elements within the environment. For example, a clever bowling alley-themed level is nearly ruined by having to negotiate a bowling ball like a marble through jumps and turns meant for a game that controls better than this.
