Drawing inspiration from a wide range of our favorite games, including Diablo (power scaling and item visualization), Yume Nikki (surrealist visual stylings and secrets), Touhou (genuine bullet hell), and Vampire Survivors (roguelike horde survival). all your upgrades into movespeed and damage stat buffs to make the game trivial. Picayune also leans into the genre’s relation to bullet hells and shmups, giving you a “focus mode” (a button you can press to slow down movement) and visible hitbox. This will allow you to more easily dodge all the bullets enemies shoot at you- which there will be plenty. If those types of shooting enemies aren’t your cup of tea, each time you defeat a boss you can sort of pick your “next area”, meaning you can just go to places where the enemies you hate don’t spawn. It’s little stuff like this that all add up to a refreshing experience that really shows there’s a lot left that can be done with autoshooters.

I feel like Picayune Dreams is surprisingly innovative in that regard, providing both flavour and features to keep things interesting. While i’ve played through five or so autoshooters so far (including the OG Vampire Survivors) I think this one is the one that stands out the most to me personally. I have not yet reached the end of the story so I am not sure about it’s conclusion, but so far i’ve really enjoyed the couple scenes i’ve gone through. Even if not much ends up happening plot-wise it just feels like a cherry on top to the rest of the experience, and the memories can be skipped if you don’t want to bother. The upgrades are entirely told to you through the game’s raw code, which is a fairly controversial feature, but I like it because it’s flavourful and gives you a ton of information if you know how to read it.
