Q.U.B.E. 2 is the sequel to the hit first-person puzzle game Q.U.B.E. You are Amelia Cross, a stranded archaeologist who has mysteriously awoken among the sand swept ruins of an ancient alien landscape. Together with the distant help of another survivor, Commander Emma Sutcliffe, you must traverse and manipulate the structure of this forgotten world to find a way back home. Waking up wearing a strange suit with attached gloves, you have no prior knowledge on how you came to be in this environment. Awaiting you is a maze-like monolith, a structure that you must navigate, solving mind-bending puzzles. Use your manipulation gloves to change and adapt the architectural structure in your search to rendezvous with another survivor, finding a way off the planet. As you explore and solve puzzles to progress, thought-provoking questions about your true purpose and the origins of the structure you are navigating will need to be considered, forcing you to come to terms with a devastating truth that will shake your world.
The first Q.U.B.E. was an instant bestseller thanks to it being one of the first to follow in Portal’s footsteps. Everyone rushed to get another fix of First-Person Puzzler happiness. The fact is though, Q.U.B.E. was merely okay. I’d go as far as call it bland. Since then, there’s been plenty more FPPs, and Q.U.B.E. 2 needs to be considerably better than its predecessor to stand out from the crowd. And as you see from the trailer and screenshots, the devs have certainly worked hard on the graphics. Gone are the stark white tiles of the original to be replaced with multi-textured surfaces and atmospheric lighting. It really is beautiful to look at. The texture quality dips a little in some environments but overall, the visuals are very effective. The music is also straight out of the top drawer and isn’t overdone, fading in and out as the occasion demands. The really important thing, of course, is the puzzle design. I found most of the puzzles fairly straightforward.

80+ puzzles make up the game, and they are all very well designed, adhering to a gentle difficulty curve which starts off extremely easy, introducing the basic mechanics and the different ways they can be used in combination with each other, and later begins to introduce new secondary puzzle elements such as moving platforms, magnets, and fans, as the puzzles grow more complex. The puzzle design is therefore overall very strong, providing immense satisfaction and enjoyment, and relying almost solely on logic rather than execution. However, not everyone will be satisfied with the puzzles.
