About The Game
Railbound is a comfy track-bending puzzle game about a pair of dogs on a train journey around the world. Connect and sever railways across the world to help everyone reach their homes, and solve over 150 clever puzzles ranging from gentle slopes to twisted passageways. BEND RAILS TO MAKE THE TRAIN GO ‘CHOO-CHOO’ Place, remove and reroute connections so that carriages safely connect to the locomotive. A simple set of rules are premised. They are expanded upon with different mechanics that force you to think up a different solution. Levels get increasingly difficult until the mechanics have been exhausted. Now solve puzzles with a combination of these mechanics. As a bonus, have some optional levels as real headscratchers. The minimalistic art style is perfect at conveying the clarity of different objects in a level. Thanks for the reset button and ability to see solutions to completed levels. Enter Railbound, a game that does what I wished Cosmic Express did back then (again – just bringing up the game because it is very similar yet different in a few important key aspects, so the comparison is apt. Plus the game and it’s problems stuck with me and felt like the antithesis of what puzzles should be). Mainly, it allows itself to set restrictions which lower the amount of trial-and-error to basically zero.
Railbound Pre-Installed:
This one goes in the long list of puzzle games I’ll 100% in ~5 hours and will have enjoyed my time playing A few years ago, I reviewed a little game called “Cosmic Express” and I gave it a pretty heavy-handed negative review that garnered a bit of “controversy”. That game was conceptually very similar to Railbound – you lay down train tracks to get your train carts to the main train (or, in CE, the exit). When I played and reviewed Cosmic Express, I had a lot of gripes about how open-ended and thus “trial-and-errory” the game was. With so much open space and so many possible ways to lay down the tracks and pick up passengers as well as barely any limitations, it devolved quickly to blindly trying out everything until something works, which is the opposite of fun puzzling. Puzzling should be intuitive and you should be able to look at a puzzle and figure out the solution in your head, logically, without ever touching the mouse or controller if you want to.
