Record of Lodoss War ~Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth~ is a 2D action-exploration “Metroidvania”-style game developed under the close supervision of original creator Ryo Mizuno, depicting the previously unknown story of Deedlit and the events leading up to Record of Lodoss War: Diadem of the Covenant. Both fans of Record of Lodoss War and all-new players alike can fully enjoy this latest installment in the series. Deedlit awakens suddenly in a mysterious, unknown place. Where am I? Why am I here? With nobody around to respond, her questions are met with only silence. Seeking answers, Deed eventually sets off on foot, alone… Use your sword for powerful melee attacks against enemies within range, or employ projectile attacks using your bow and arrows against those farther away. Freely equip and utilize swords and arrows obtained along the way. The powerful weapons and tools you acquire can be used to your advantage throughout your journey. You can also sell off weapons you no longer need.
Alternate among a selection of useful elemental spirits to change Deedlit’s various attributes. While using Sylph, the wind spirit, wind-based attacks do less damage. When the flame spirit Salamander is in use, fire-based attacks do less damage. You can raise the levels of your elemental spirits by absorbing the “Soul Screams” generated when attacking and defeating enemies. Each spirit’s level is displayed as Deed’s own power level. When a spirit’s level has maxed out at 3, HP will be automatically recovered. Let’s start with the positive aspects. One of the enjoyable features is the ability to switch between Fire and Wind affinity to exploit enemy weaknesses. It’s even more fun because you become immune to the element you’re currently attuned to. The only downside is that the game only offers two elemental forms, so if you come across an enemy weak to the earth element, you better hope you’ve already found the earth spell, otherwise, you’ll have to make do with Water or Fire.

On top of that, the pixel art is simply stunning, and the game’s environments and characters are visually appealing. Another cool thing about the game is the unique healing mechanic. It rewards you for avoiding damage for a while, which coincides with the main way to heal. I haven’t seen this kind of mechanic in many other games, and I think more games should try something similar. If you hit or kill enemies enough, you gain experience points for the element you didn’t use. When that element reaches Level 3 (the maximum), you slowly regenerate HP when using it. But if you get hit, the element you’re using loses one Level. Essentially, you’re rewarded with some passive healing for playing well. Now let’s talk about the aspects that didn’t sit well with me. Some of the challenges and achievements felt poorly designed. For example, the Bow challenge didn’t actually reward me for aiming well; it was more about memorizing patterns and finding the best shooting angles, as the targets and obstacles always had the exact same movement patterns. Additionally, the achievement to “Acquire all weapons” required me to own all weapons at the same time, so I had to farm money and buy back some I sold, thinking I just needed a full weapon log.
