Rediscover Meaning, and Hope Through the fight against the Ichor, and the satisfying completion of peculiar puzzles, balance out the chaos of the Infinite Realms and reconcile your own inner turmoil. I’m a big fan of art games, but this one falls into the pitfall of being so desperate to have a meaningful and emotional narrative, that it stumbles over itself trying to stuff a dramatic story into a vehicle that could stand on its own. As a puzzle game, it is creative and beautiful. The visuals are stunning, the mechanics are interesting and rewarding. The “game inside the game” of Recursive Ruin is a wonderful game that explores concepts of infinity, futility, repetition and even the agency we have in life itself. Outside the puzzle game there is a wrapping of hyper dramatic, overwrought meta game with terrible voice acting. These games want so badly to be the next “braid” so they chock their story so full of trauma and emotional turmoil that it becomes as shlocky as a soap opera. All the tropes are there, drugs, domestic abuse, will-they-or-won’t they relationships.
Recursive Ruin Direct Play:
I’m torn about this game. Overall, I recommend it because I think the recursive element is so cool looking and done really well in the game that it is worth playing, but there are some parts of the game I really didn’t like. First and foremost is that Recursive Ruin is primarily not a puzzle game by any means. It is a narrative story game. While this is cool, I also found that it really took away from the main thing the game had going for it, which is extremely unique puzzles and cool visuals. When this game is good, it’s really good, but besides from that it is boring and convoluted. About halfway through the game I found myself not able to sit through the uncomfortable dialogue (which you had to constantly click the character to hear since it would only play in little batches), and I stopped caring about the story. Maybe it all just went above my head but the story telling just felt messy and not needed. This game felt like it was trying to do so many things at once when really it should’ve just been a cool puzzle game with awesome visuals.
