I actually played Case of the Golden Idol first, and that is another fantastic game in a similar vein to Return of the Obra Dinn. The first thing that struck me about ROTOD is its unique visual style, reminiscent of classic Macintosh games. At first I was unimpressed, but as the scenes slowly unfolded in front of me, I came to realize I was completely engrossed by this masterpiece.
This monochromatic aesthetic not only adds a sense of nostalgia but also enhances the game’s atmosphere, immersing you in its eerie setting. The attention to detail is truly remarkable, with each scene meticulously crafted to bring the haunting ship to life. As an insurance investigator armed with a magical pocket watch, you’re tasked with uncovering the fate of each crew member onboard the ship. The brilliance lies in the game’s puzzle-solving mechanics, which rely on your powers of observation and deduction. By examining frozen moments in time, you must identify the deceased, their cause of death, and their relationships. It’s a challenging but incredibly satisfying endeavor that will test your wits and keep you engrossed for hours on end.
