Rogue: Genesia Steam Pre-Installed
This is the meatiest and most well-fleshed out Garlic-like I’ve ever played. This game is tons of fun and has an unbelievable amount of content. The developer is currently getting for doing something that I would distrust AAA devs for doing, but he has a good track record and, as an indie dev, I don’t blame him for taking every opportunity he can find. Seriously this is one the best games in the genre. The amount of content is absolutely incredible, and I’ve never played a game that leaves the impression of both a sandbox AND a game with definite objectives. Sandbox because the amound of different cards (= upgrades and weapons) is so huge you can make about any build you want.
fIt’s a survivors style game with a good amount of different characters with plenty of different weapons and ways you can build each character. If you’re a fan of vampire survivors you will probably enjoy this. The game is amazing. It feels like Vampire Survivors and Brotato merged together and went on steroids. The game runs well at 5120 x 1440 resolution, except for some tiny bugs. However, it would be much better if the HUD was positioned more towards the center, as if it were in a 16:9 format, rather than being at the very edges of the screen. It’s hard to look all the way to the edges while playing.

It doesn’t make a strong first impression with a slow start and pretty bland visuals, but there’s a really surprising amount of depth under the surface. The achievements are integrated into the game as the means to unlock new cards and shop upgrades, which are a lot of fun to complete. Shop upgrades come from doing uniquely modified challenge runs (you can’t move, can only have one weapon, etc.) Cards are unlocked by min-maxing various stats to their extremes, completing milestones, defeating bosses, etc. Working through these unlocks and having short (45-90sec) stages broken up by a Slay The Spire style map feels like a much better way to use this gameplay formula than Vampire Survivors. It also feels thoughtfully designed; there are no useless cards, no dump stats, and you will be punished and rewarded for decision-making. Overall, a really surprising gem that still has a bunch of content promised for the remainder of 2023. Absolutely worth the price, no sale needed.
