It’s time for an adventure! Once classes are over, RPG Time begins! Game master Kenta’s notebook holds a handwritten RPG made just for you. After school, the classroom transforms into the world of “The Legend of Wright,” an RPG designed by young aspiring game maker Kenta. As you make your way through the game, crafted by Kenta from drawings and cardboard and stationery, you’ll see that it’s so much more than “just” an RPG. Despite the name, RPG Time also features everything from action to adventure to bullet hell to turn-based battles! It’s a treasure chest stuffed full of fun, and there’s no telling what Kenta will pull out next.

First dreamed up 15 years ago, then brought to fruition through more than 9 years in development, RPG Time has been praised for its boundless innovation and creativity, receiving several awards from game development festivals around the world such as Tokyo Game Show, Taipei Game Show, BitSummit, and more. The core mechanic of the Swapper is quite simple: you can create clones of yourself at set locations, move all your clones simultaneously and even swap control into a clone. This deceptively simple idea leads to a variety of interesting puzzles to solve. The artistic qualities of this game are wonderful. The look of the game is pleasing to the eyes. The use of ambient background sound etc really helps set a particular mood.

The puzzles are very easy, so it is best thought of as a diversion than than a challenge. The game needs to be played a minimum of five times through to see every ending for every character, and long, slow ladder-climbing animations sometimes slow sections down to a tedious crawl. There’s a noticeable systematic use of padding to artificially increase playtime, a very obnoxious practice. The controls are very floaty which makes platforming imprecise. The story-telling has its moments but feels a bit shallow at times. Worst of all, because you’re tasked with controlling three characters at once, you’ll find yourself constantly switching between them and moving them one by one. This gets repetitive very quickly and becomes more of a hassle than anything. Why there was no option to control all three at once is beyond me, but it could’ve gone a long way towards eliminating the annoying backtracking that hampers the game’s pacing.
