The world of the game is quite thoroughly created, even if it feels unnatural with all those mechanical beasts and rapidly changing climate/biomes. It’s all more or less explained and settled in the game course, both by narrative and gameplay measures. And also, speaking of the gameplay, the action part there is really cool. Diverse, fluid, demanding, rewarding… Especially the first 10 or 20 hours of it.
But, thankfully, inventory management is not that needed to play Horizon Zero Dawn, as it is with some actual RPGs. On the basic level, you just need to have enough resources to make more arrows, and that will be enough. I can really tell you some great tales about my open world travels there, and I have also enjoyed tomb raiding-styled dungeon missions. I wish I could say I’ve enjoyed the whole game as well, but… There is that major itch in the game plot. Feministic narrative. I certainly don’t mind strong women, even the whole wild bunch of them, like there in Horizon Zero Dawn. If that was somehow balanced. However, 90, no, 95% of male characters in this story are arrogant, insolent, hidebound, if not dimwitted, and ultimately weak.

And with that, all that thoroughly created universe and cool game experience, is falling apart. Turning inside out like old snakeskin. Yep, I am stating that fantastic game where our Earth is changed greatly, the self-replicating mechanisms became the major population, could be all right and quite believable, if not the gender roles distribution, where nearly every woman is so much better than any man Sure, you’ll meet some way-too-nasty enemies closer to the final, and then there is that tedious inventory/loot/craft management, which is quite close to be frustrating, somewhere on the Fallout 3/4 level.
