A new SAMURAI WARRIORS begins. After a 7-year wait, a new instalment in the tactical action series “SAMURAI WARRIORS” is finally here. With this title, the historical period depicted in the first title of the “SAMURAI WARRIORS” series released in 2004 has been revamped. With visuals that have largely evolved since the first “SAMURAI WARRIORS”, additional officers, and evolved actions, an even deeper drama set in the warring states is depicted. Also, with a focus on the lives of officers Nobunaga Oda and Mitsuhide Akechi, in order to more intensely and boldly depict the warring states era spanning from the end of the Ōnin War to the Incident at Honnōji, the title is the beginning of a new series, in which the stories and characters from the traditional “SAMURAI WARRIORS” have been revamped. With officers whose designs have been revamped, as well as new officers, a total of 27 Samurai Warriors join the battle. Officers such as a young Nobunaga Oda, known as the “Great Fool”, and daimyō Yoshimoto Imagawa, who was called the “Greatest Archer in all of Kaidō”, appear with new designs that match the setting of this title. Also, new officers such as Toshimitsu Saitō, a retainer of Mitsuhide Akechi, as well as Kōga ninja Mitsuki join the battle. Thoroughly enjoy playing this, it has been upgraded from the last game, was expecting more of the same, but the leveling requirements have changed a bit, as well as the character designs and story. upgrades, crafts, game mode and more abilities in actual game-play make this feel like a worthy successor to previous versions. This game feels like a deliberate attempt to go back to basics, its got the vibe of the original game about it, and i think its probably better off for it. the wide array of characters in SW4 didnt bug me much as a musou veteran but you have to admit its completely overwhelming for new players. i prefer that koei is willing to try different things – i also like dw9 so most people are probably going to not take me seriously anyway. whatever you lose from the changes to hyper attacks you make up for in the fact that this is one of the best feeling musou games theyve ever made…attacks flow together smoother than ever, the AI is more aggressive, theres great quality of life changes with the UI, its basically more accessible than ever. anyway, i buy these games because i love beautiful men; this game is full of them.
I’ve been a fan of the Warriors series for most of my life, starting with DW2, I’ve seen the highs and lows of this franchise, and the start of the Samurai side series. I consider DW8XL one of, if not the best of the series, and everything about 9 was a complete failure to reimagine and reinvigorate. So when news broke of Samurai Warriors 5 and it also attempting to reimagine the series, I like many, dreaded the worst. Now, 16 hours in, I can confidently say Koei has a massive success in this rebooted franchise. Firstly, if you’re new the the series, you wont mind both the reduced roster and scope of the game. For veterans, it could be a deal breaker. The game focuses now entirely on the story of Nobunaga’s rise to power and sudden fall. This means many characters have not made a return, including series poster boy Yukimura and personal favorite Masamune. If your favorite wasnt important to Nobunaga’s story, there’s a high chance they’re gone. Even a few characters that were close to Oda are gone, namely Ranmaru and Keiji. As a tradeoff, the characters remaining have been incredibly well characterized, and the singular story fleshed out. Imagawa is now a presence that lasts several missions, rather than being killed off in the first mission. All that said, the gameplay is among the best the series has had the offer. It’s fast and energetic, has many options, and can be challenging at times. On top of that, the story is told incredibly well. Koei actually tried with this one, and it pays off.
