About The Game
Saurian is a dinosaur survival experience set in Hell Creek 66 million years ago. Players will take control of several extinct species in their natural environment and attempt to survive from hatchling to adult. Staying alive means managing physical needs while avoiding predators and natural hazards in an open world landscape reflecting up-to-date scientific knowledge of the Hell Creek ecosystem. Alright, back at it again with another controversial game review. Saurian. If I’m correct, you’re here to decide whether or not you should play this game. Well, before you decide, just know that I’ve only marked my review positive so as not to harm the game’s chances with yet another negative review. Because honestly, for this game, I’m not sure whether I think you should play it or not. So for this review I’m simply going to state some good and some bad, and let you make a decision for yourself. I played this game over a year ago, and after a long break, I came back and tried it again. So what lies before you is my fresh, up to date notes on the current gameplay experience.
One thing I find pretty pleasant about this game is the environment. The assortment of trees and ferns, the colors, the day and night lighting, as well as the various AI scattered about really make the atmosphere immersive and realistic. The music is also unique, original and enjoyable, somewhat reminiscent of Minecraft. The tense instrumentals during night instill a general sense of unease on your first few nights. Then in the morning, you’re greeted with more pleasant music, celebrating the dawn of a new day. Two things about the environement, however. The map is pretty, but the graphics are sub-par, unless you have them on the maximum setting. In addition to that, every time I turn the camera to see behind me and then try to get back on course, it causes the game to freeze up and lag for several seconds, and doesn’t let up even after the game has been running a while. This, as you could imagine, leads to issues. I have a fairly high end gaming computer, and even with that I had these issues.
Moving on though, I’ll talk about the dinosaurs themselves a bit. There are currently two playables; Dakotaraptor and Triceratops. You are given the options to name your dinosaurs, choose their gender, and adjust the difficulty, day and night settings all before starting a new game. You also can have multiple saves, so you could try every combination you want, and not have to delete a character. The game does little in the way of explaining the mechanics if you’ve already done the tutorial, which made replaying the game a bit tricky for me. What I’m including in this review is only my experience playing Dakotaraptor and Triceratops without the help of in game tips, if they exist. Trike’s gameplay is easier than Dakota, in my opinion. I’ve always enjoyed herbivore gameplay over carnivores, so I settled right into Trike’s play style. You spawn as a little baby, protected by a couple of adult trikes, with also a few nest mates. Usually the first hour or so is pretty boring
