You will be able to change the game mode to online cooperation, even if you start in single player mode. In Scrapnaut players take the role of a stranded survivor crashed on an unknown, bleak planet populated by murderous machines. After meeting an unlikely ally, the protagonist will engage in a series of dangerous quests; building, scavenging and fighting his way through the wasteland, with leaving the planet as final objective. Catapulted into a hostile territory, the initial feeling for most players will be one of confusion and oppression, seeing their oxygen supplies dwindling for the poisonous atmosphere, with enemies all around. Luckily enough, not too far into the main story the re-commissioning of a vital oxygen generator will reduce this threat to zero for a while – this is the mechanism behind making each new zone livable, each time needing more and rarer parts. After that is sorted, some more laid-back exploration can be carried out, but always keeping an eye on the hunger gauge and health is recommended: notably, severe starvation instantly kills instead of depleting HP slowly as in most other games.
The world is dotted with points of interest all already revealed on the global map, which is convenient but also detracts some sense of discovery, they range from abandoned houses with supplies, to mine shafts and ruins. Don’t lose hope yet, as in this robot-infested hellscape there are some relatively safe havens, called Build Areas. In each, players can freely construct a wide range of facilities, such as walls, crafting tables, farming plots, defensive turrets and energy-related machinery, provided they have the required materials, in turn gathered around the world with tools that can break and need to be constantly replaced (no repair mechanic, strangely enough). Each point of interest usually holds a solid quantity of supplies, so getting a base going isn’t an immediate concern even on the higher difficulties, but getting it done quickly is recommended anyway.

Once some facilities, farming plots and power-generating structures are going, there will unlikely be any more supply related problems about tools and food, as the base materials are rather plentiful in the world. As the game goes on, blueprints and more advanced materials can be acquired, along with Skill books (as well found laying around in locations), thus enabling unlocking and making higher-tier structures or gear. Setting up a custom base can be satisfying and is a good change of pace from the exploration / combat loop, with overall good quality of life that doesn’t make things too annoying. Periodically, player bases get attacked by hordes of violent machines, that get more powerful with each newly-discovered zone. Setting up a defensive perimeter made of turrets and walls is fundamental, as repelling an attack alone would be extremely difficult.
