Sebil Engineering is a game about “fixing” roads. It features open ended gameplay, a branching level structure and levels designed to be solved in numerous different ways. Play in overhead view or drop down a surveyor tool to get right into the action in first person view, where you can explore the level on foot, adjust roads more precisely and try not to get yourself run over. It is impossible to make a good, hard physics based puzzle game. You can make a good hard game without physics, and you can make a good physics game without difficulty, but the vagaries of physics engines make them too frustrating to deal with if you also make the game hard. FrogStore has done the impossible and made Sebil Engineering, a good hard physics based puzzle game. The secret of this alchemy is the admixture of two design choices: That there are a finite number of discrete vertices to tweak in each level, and when you tweak them, they move a fixed distance. Only with both of these choices can the game work.
A better programmer would build a proud geometry engine that can dynamically reshape itself, allowing you to tweak any arbitrary point of the level, contorting it into wild shapes. A designer more anxious to add juice would replace your wrench with a cement mixer which pours out onto the vertices slowly and gradually, giving you fine control over the exact height of your mounds. Physics systems are chaotic in the strict definition of the word: small changes to the starting conditions create unpredictable outcomes. This is a delight at first, since you don’t know what’ll happen when you tweak the level, but when you have a very difficult goal to complete it becomes hell, becuase you don’t know what will happen when you tweak the level.
