Simultaneously control a sword-wielding robot and a gunslinging space frog in Shoulders of Giants, an explosively colourful sci-fi roguelike designed to put your teamwork to the test. The forces of Entropy are spreading chaos through the stars, corrupting living planets and urging on the heat death of the universe. Led by the psychic Owl, one scrappy team of space survivors are fighting to restore the balance. A mysterious mech! A sharpshooting amphibian! Together they must cut through waves of enemies and restore light and life to the galaxy! It’s dangerous to go alone! Play solo, or team up with a friend, each taking control of either the frog or the robot. Battle the forces of entropy in four-player online co-op. Is your teamwork strong enough to survive? From grappling hooks to glowing grenades, each new pickup can radically alter your power and playstyle. Mix and match abilities to create a moveset that’s all your own! This game is a gem and I’m sad I hadn’t heard of it until I stumbled upon an ad for Ultimate (missed out on the vanilla game from EGS). This game is similar to Risk of Rain 2, but is more tactical given the separate abilities between robot and frog. It’s also much easier on the eyes and feels less random (less prayers to RNGesus). The risk/reward factor for saving a planet (completing a run) adds a nice challenge and indeed rewards you well with unlockable weapons, cores, etc. Shoulders of Giants: Ultimate (SoG) combines the good from Gunfire Reborn and Risk of Rain 2 and builds upon it to deliver a fun experience. The main loop has you playing as a robo-mech controlled by the frog from Chrono Trigger, hopping (pun intended) from planet to planet.

Your goal is to cleanse the planets, and in doing so, you are rewarded with experience and items to do the same thing again, but faster – Simple, right? Imagine the combat from Gunfire Reborn, allowing you to switch between melee and ranged on the fly, where each mode has three unique abilities. Now, couple that with the world exploration of Risk of Rain 2, adding anomalies which modify enemies and planets (including their terrain). Finally, add on top a unique approach to gameplay (best friend mode especially), with the addition of crafting and GERM Cores, and you’ve a real winner on your hands. SoG also features arena challenges, bosses with unique mechanics, objectives such as charging beacons, eliminating marked enemies or Entropy Spires (towers), and tiered equipment and skills (levels and rarity). It’s easy to see the inspiration from, and similarities to Gunfire Reborn and Risk of Rain 2 throughout the game.
