Fight your way out of a planet prison in this 2D hand-drawn roguelite platformer! You’ve been captured and sent to entertain aliens as a gladiator in a faraway planet called Tartarus. You will have to advance through randomly generated biomes with deadly traps and monsters blocking your path. Choose your opponents in the arenas, beat them for items and coins and you might be able to earn your freedom! Tight and fluid controls that allow you to dodge and fight enemies without taking hits – the only ceiling is your own skillset! Hundreds of hand-crafted rooms that are randomly picked to make every new run feel unique. 50+ enemies and 10 bosses to beat with different movesets and attack patterns. 300+ items including pets, weapons and trinkets that unlock new abilities for your characters. Pop your heart out to heal yourself, throw meatballs or fire a laser gun. 8 unique characters that fit different playstyles, including a potato and an alien worm in underpants. Customize your runs by choosing harder paths if you’re feeling confident or easier ones if you’re on the brink of death. High risk, high reward.
So far, I have had a lot of fun with Space Gladiators although I am not particularly good at it. The gameplay feels rather challenging and usually I am always running out of health rather quickly with not enough replenishing to carry a run too far. There is still much balancing being retweaked constantly. Maybe one of these days, I will find the right set of items and play well enough to see the game through. The charm of the game comes from the hand-drawn artwork, the mostly ridiculous sound effects, and the ease and fluidity of the controls. You can see easily where the developer had taken inspiration for this game. I think overall the conglomerate game is quite unique and fun. It also has enough variety in the items and enemy types to keep you feeling pretty fresh with your individual runs. There are 50+ different enemy types, 7 bosses, and 250 or so items that show up randomly. Despite these though, starting every run from the same location means that you have to keep persevering through similar traps and repeated rooms with the same enemy types makes it feel a bit too repetitive in that regard.
Space Gladiators Direct Play:
This is the worst for me as I cannot make it out of the first biome and so a lot of the rooms start to feel a little stale after a bunch of runs, despite the change in items. I think I have encountered 20 or so different enemy types, I imagine the rest are in the other biomes I haven’t seen yet. The game does have variable path selection in each run as you can look at the mini-map and decide which way to go. It usually displays a few rooms down the line, so you can plan ahead a bit. Enemy rooms and trap rooms have different symbols showing you if they are easy, medium, or hard rooms. It’s a risk-reward system that looks to provide payout comparable to what you are willing to dive into, as long as you survive in the end. Similarly, gladiator arenas serve as within-biome progression markers that gives you a choice of enemies and also payouts.
