This game is a challenge for brave people. A challenge worthy of a true Squidding Master. Do you think you have what it takes to reach the top? PROVE IT!! In this adventure you will have to help a slippery squid to reach the stars. But be careful, because you may stumble and slip back to where you started. Prove your worth by leading this clueless squid to the top. The placement of these puzzles was on point, in terms of offering the player a change of pace from back tracking, investigating and fighting. The number/frequency of them was also spot on; not too many to wear out their welcome but enough of them to keep you on your toes about the manner of challenge to come. A requisite for successful immersion, this is still hard to pull off.
While the audio logs did most of the heavy lifting here, the game still makes effective use of enemy appearance, activity, and placement, as well as level layout, in order to hint at the story and help advance the plot. The ‘doctors’ in the med bays, the… mess in the bays/docks on the flight deck, the differences in the variety of cyborgs, the existence of cyberspace… they all tell you a little bit about Citadel Station, what happened and what is still going on. There are exceptions to every rule: for example, if the desired experience is one of challenge or difficulty, I see a good faith argument for requiring the player to maintain their own progress as simply one more decision to make, one more responsibility or measure of player ability.

There’s even room to say that, regardless of the original design intent, there are methods of play available in this version of System Shock which fall squarely into the ‘are you good enough to do THIS’ style of play where check pointing would be unwelcome. You do have a limit on your stamina and will fall if it runs out but wall jumping does deplete stamina on wall climbing but at a much less pace than actually climbing. You can only dash once, the only time for you to get your dash back is by either stepping on a platform or getting a green star to give your dash back There are a total of 9 chapters in the game, although two of them are bonus chapters that can only be accessed if you are someone who likes to go out of their way to collect things in the game. These chapters are a bit harder than the seven that you can play initially, with the final chapter of course being the hardest.
