Starless Abyss Steam Pre-Installed
Similarly, it’s clear that the developers wanted to make it pretty obvious which cards are associated with which builds. Cards tend to fall into a handful of categories: radioactivity acts as the game’s poison effect and synergizes with cards that deal extra damage to irradiated foes. Turrets allow you to set up automated defenses and will attack enemies for you even when your action points are depleted. A variety of debuff and buff cards enhance various aspects of your ships or weaken those of enemies. And, of course, there are plenty of straight damage cards, if you just want to blow up. Some might complain that there’s a comparative lack of depth in the build mechanics here, but I say that the developers leaned into the “do just a few things, but do them right” school of thought. The combat mechanics won’t satisfy a Paradox-level strategy game itch, but there’s enough there to keep things interesting.

As far as the plot goes, I am admittedly not very far into the game, but the premise is nothing new: in the past, humanity pulled some quantum levers and unleashed horrors beyond man’s comprehension into our reality. Eventually, mankind established a faction dedicated to eliminating the eldritch threat, and that’s where you come in. Is it novel? Not really– one is reminded of The Warp from Warhammer 40k, a much more firmly established IP. That said– does it matter? In my opinion, no. This is a game about freaky pixel art, knife-edge space combat, and an actually pretty respectable soundtrack. You don’t play it for the plot, but you appreciate that it’s there.
