Achievements: Completionists rejoice! Eye candy: Animated character portraits, bloom filter and more! Trading cards: With a character set like this? Of course! It’s a very short 2d platforming game where the main goal is digging down, while avoiding enemies and upgrading your robot-self to further manoeuvrability such as getting a powered jump when you crouch or super speed akin to a metroidvania. Ironically though, it’s biggest strength is it’s speed and lack of length. Trying to beat the game in a run less than 2hrs 30 minutes without dying requires you having to micromanage new obstacles and challenges that confront you as the entire mine itself is random in itself placement of mineable ore and enemies each time. That being said, the rooms where you acquire each upgrade are always static and as is the thematic choices chosen to represent each area.
SteamWorld Dig Direct Play:
Aside from the very end of the game that requires you to backtrack to two earlier areas with new power-ups you’ve acquired to find a secret entrance to access the end of the game. I felt this part of the game was sloppy and although at this point I had alot of money, power and health it felt like I just had to unsatisfyingly trudge through an early stage of the game. It may seem stupid to complain about a metroidvania doing this, but in this game the entire path you make is destructible so there isn’t really a linear path for you to get to these areas anymore. It served as a passable prequel to the second adventure, whilst not as good, sprawling and expansive in its scope as the second game, in its own right a wonderful enough game.
