This is a game made for chilling and painting! There are some friends hearing music and chilling out while you show your creativity, but the police and their dogs just want to stop the fun! make them happy with some tasty donuts, paint the walls and make colorfull creations, play soccer and try to make a goal, get the pizza and feed the hungry bear, a great space to paint, hear music, chill out around and have fun escaping from funny actors. I won’t be wasting valuable emptiness dwelling on the outside, so I’ll quickly recite what kind of game Kentucky Route Zero is – you know all the mundane stuff – before heading straight to the inside: the Zero. KRZ is equal parts graphic point’n’click and a text adventure; interactive fiction and theatre play.
It has choices and dialogue trees in abundance, but used as a means of expression not for any branching: colour the experience with your personal flavour, see yourself reflected. Do you want to be a matter-of-fact, get-on-with-it player or would you rather linger, space out, go on a tangent, explore a side story, express the inner poet in you, drift…? Choices change a lot on a micro, but not on a macro level. It’s like you can look behind and play with the past and uncertain memories, but ahead is already defined. To me, this is the blood of KRZ, all those ghost stories along the road.

This will be the hardest and the easiest review to write. Is there such a thing as too much inspiration? How do you capture a vision in a dream? Sort of familiar, sort of strange. It will be a long one, kinda like a short essay. Impressionistic more than anything else, maybe a bit fragmented in trying to capture moments, jumping from point to point, carried by the shifting currents of inspiration. Because attempting to encapsulate every side of this multifaceted game would need multiple interconnected reviews akin to a glowing twenty-sided die, more a mystery than a puzzle. Better just play the game. With every new reading, barriers dissolve, something opens up. I imagine, after a few more replays, or just late reflections, this would be a very different review. I tried to record one of its many forms before it evaporated like an echo.
