About The Game
High school student Kihara Kashin is trapped by an unknown force in Kuromori-chō. She accidentally ran into Kiritani Yuki who told her she had to travel to the past in order to get out of Kuromori-chō. And so, the adventure begins. What lies ahead, is not just the secrets hidden behind Kuromori-chō, but the strange and exciting world of yōkai. ·The main story has three immersive chapters. The story is based on historical events mixed with our own imagination to provide an unusual and attractive narrative. Simple and descriptive narration and dialogue. One of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played, it far exceeded any expectation I had. It’s simple and yet complex; rich but not overwhelming. It’s a short journey, but every second is precious. Tales of the Black Forest is an experience I want to remember; and come back to someday. It has a very captivating story, with few, equally appealing, subplots. All the characters you’ll meet are memorable, no matter if they’re a major character or not, and you’ll be able to spot on them the dedication and love the developers put into this adventure. This title transits with the utmost care on the fine line between tragedy and happiness, something that is only possible due to the great writing it has. It’s a very rewarding experience, because as a player you’ll get to feel both extremes. Many moments will be heart-wrenching, but in the end there is always a way to fix things, to make it better and reach happiness. I like happy endings, I like things that can be fixed through good intentions and a good heart, and this game provides great conclusions to every arc that comes up. It’s very linear, so it’s not that hard to experience everything this game has to offer.
Other than the great story, this game is visually beautiful. It has a simple pixel art style, that is reminiscent of rpg maker games to some extent, but at the same time it has details that make it stunning without being too flashy. Maybe I am not good at describing how things look, but just trust me that this thing looks great. The characters, at least the main ones, have portraits that will appear when you talk to them, they’re all well drawn. The ambients are all very good too, despite it being a short game, each chapter has its own scenario and they’re all unique and have their own vibe. And then the last point, which is also one of the strongest for me, is the soundtrack. This game has beautiful pieces that will play during the important moments, they’re all memorable and very touching. I found myself getting emotional easily, the music being a great contributor to that. The rest of the BGM is okay, can’t say I’ve paid too much attention to it, but it also didn’t feel like it was either lacking or being too intrusive. What I mean is, put all the beautiful things about this game together and you’ll get the perfect formula for tears; but it’s alright, ’cause the tears will be of joy at some point during your gameplay.
