Combat in The Evil Within is intense. Blood spills out like jam when the player’s shots hit their marks, twinkling red-yellow under dingy, green lights in murky sewers, churches and caves. Enemies die slowly, absorbing each bullet with a growing stagger, growling and lunging towards the player. When they do die fast, they typically explode in a shower of viscera and slime. It is the same viscera and slime the player will soon be wading through, shambling along the broken glass and barbed wires that used to be inside the monsters previously exorcised. This is the world the player must run through, one sadistic trap after another vying to mutilate and eviscerate them. Their movement is hurried, heavy and deliberate, while they strain to find the ideal positions to return fire on relentless crowds of mutilated, grinning undead. I found myself musing on the expression “right tool for the job” as I maneuvered my way through many of the combat encounters in this game. The player must select the correct weapon, engage the correct enemy, hide when appropriate, push forward when necessary, and never drop a precious match when the stars don’t exactly align. Oftentimes those stars are other enemies hurling themselves towards the player, crossing paths with the still wrestling, downed creature, who, when set alight, will take out the whole group of foes in one blaze of fire. Utilizing the right tool for the job, at the right time, is exhilarating in The Evil Within.
