Enjoyed the mod? If you liked the mod, you’re going to love the stand-alone game. We’ve taken the best elements of the mod, re-written the script, which is now more than twice the length of the original at 80,000+ words, and added plenty of exciting new twists, endings, and surprises. Walk the streets of a brand new city. Get to know re-imagined characters. Solve challenging new puzzles with new gameplay mechanics, and enjoy an all-new orchestral score and professional voice acting. This is the story we always wanted to tell, for you to enjoy all over again – and again. The Forgotten City may have evolved from a mod for an action RPG, but like the mod, this game is in a totally different genre. It’s a mystery adventure game, developed by a core team of three people. If you don’t go into this expecting a Triple-A action RPG, you’ll have a much better time. A genuinely fantastic game, well written and paced even with the looping time mechanic and branching directions to explore. The broad narrative conceit is that you’re stuck repeating the same prophetic day in a lost Roman city; you’ve been brought there on the day that the Golden Rule is broken, a divine law that states any breaking of it will end up in punishing every person in the city. There’s a sense of genuine mystery in figuring out which actions — both your own and other NPCs — will break the Golden Rule and hurdle you back through time again to the start of the day. You’ll test easy ones like stealing early on, but also subtler differences such as checking if there’s a difference between the phrase ‘I’m going to kill you!’ vs. ‘If you don’t stop doing that, I’m going to kill you. I was also really pleased to see a fantastic weaving of gameplay and mechanics — it’s still an indie game so there are a few dialogue trees that won’t be perfect, but by and large talking to people at different points of their questline feels complete no matter whether you’re meeting them for the first time or you’ve looped time enough to be their best friend.
Bonus shoutout for the way they handled the tedium of completing multiple quests when time resets. You effectively delegate responsibilities onto a key member of town as you find their solution, slowly making him Roman Bill Murray as he fixes the towns problems. You won’t get credit, but you also don’t need credit — items carry over between resets and you already have the key, weapon, or object they gave you for completing their quest earlier. Raising that one guy’s social standing through the automation system might also help come election day as well. In terms of gameplay, you’re largely going to be talking through the game with a few minor mechanical challenges. Action segments are few and easy, but quite short so they don’t overstay their welcome and help break up the long dialogue trees where the meat of the game is kept. I think the interpretative aspects of the Golden Rule could have been explored a little deeper in gameplay (the final verdict on it is somewhat of a Lore Dump, which is one of the weaker points in the game), but there’s plenty of people to unpack in their motivations and stories. My only real issue with it is that I would have preferred a few of those to be implicit, or tied to the character resolution itself, but the core looping mechanic makes that a little difficult.
