A self-remaster of the 1994 spinoff to Taito’s 1987 arcade classic, The NinjaWarriors, with The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors, Tengo Project have taken the original console beat ’em up and reimagined it, adding extra moves & combos, 2 new characters, 2 player co-op, fluid, even more hand animated pixel art and an amped up soundscape to boot! Select one of five android ninjas, each with their own unique ninjutsu techniques, and take the battle to Banglar’s army alone, or with a ninja partner, as part of Mulk’s revolutionary force! Maintaining the original’s 16-bit style, Return of the Warriors expands its playfield from 4:3 to a wide 16:9, adding heavily redrawn backgrounds, even more fluidly animated characters and explosive pyrotechnics. The enhanced music comes courtesy of a new, arranged soundtrack, alongside unlockable soundtracks from the 16-bit console original, and arcade version, by Zuntata.
Multiple difficulties provide challenge for even the most seasoned ninja, and Time Attack allows you to compete against on the leaderboards against the fastest masters of ninjutsu in the world! It’s also one of the best beat ’em ups ever made. I’d highly recommend it to any fan of the genre, or anyone looking to get into it because although it’s unorthodox, it’s pretty easy to pick up. The trailer does a good job of showing you what you’ll get, but you’ll find five totally unique characters to choose from (including a giant mecha), eight stages that are just the right length (it’s not too long like some other modern beat ’em ups), two good soundtracks, and some of the best pixel art in the business today. What else could you need? The one knock against this game (and Tengo’s other releases) is its lack of online play. As far as I know, you can get around this by using Parsec, but I’ve never tried that myself.

Personally I don’t care, but I know this can be a big negative to a lot of people. Another difference with the usual games in the genre is that, while there are enemies with high endurance that can take multiple hits (against which you can make use of the newly introduced juggle combo system), there’s also a constant stream of simple mob enemies that are constantly harassing you, but go down in a single hit, which makes the game feel more intense and fast paced than everyone being able to take multiple hits. There’s three default characters, all with their strengths and weaknesses, with the balanced Kunoichi, the fast Kamaitachi and the heavy hitting grappler Ninja, and once you beat the game on Normal and Hard difficulties you can unlock Yaksha.
